The pier off Timmendorfer Strand, a holiday stretch of beach along the coast, round about where east used to meet west in Germany. This was summer time, the weather was in general not that bad. But what struck me about the pier then was the contrast, white against the bleak grey.
There’s something about piers – they lead to somewhere concrete for a brief period, then to a vast expanse most of the time. To nothing? Or something bigger than you, beyond the horizon, a full world of possibilities?
